Airport canopy completed

Reno/Tahoe International Airport completed work on the new canopy outside the ticketing counters of the terminal.

The canopy was built in less than two months as part of an emergency project to protect travelers during severe weather conditions.

Working in cooperation with Q & D Construction, the airport maintenance, operations and engineering departments completed the $1.7 million dollar project that spans the length of the ticket counter.

Airport officials worried that new baggage screening machines in the ticketing area would squeeze travelers outside into the elements and decided to add the canopy.

The 480-foot long canopy, designed by Tate Snyder Kimsey Architects, Reno, is constructed of 15 pre-cast concrete columns with a stone veneer finish.

The deck is made of structural steel and an acrylic deck material.

At night, the deck is illuminated by 400-watt incandescent lights.

General contractor Q & D Construction and subcontractors Electrotech, Lindell Painting, and Koefler Masonry were responsible for the work.
