Longtime Battle Mountain High teacher, coach dies

BATTLE MOUNTAIN, Nev. (AP) -- Rod Pruett, a longtime teacher and coach at Battle Mountain High School, died at his home of an undetermined cause, authorities said Thursday.

Pruett, 55, was found dead in his bed by a relative on Wednesday morning.

The death is under investigation but foul play is not suspected, Lander County Sheriff Ron Unger said Thursday. His body was sent to the Washoe County coroner's office in Reno for an autopsy but it has not been completed.

Pruett had been a teacher at the high school for 19 years, most recently teaching social studies and coaching the girls' softball team.

"He was great with kids. A great teacher," Unger told The Humboldt Sun.

Battle Mountain High School Principal Susan Davis said he was a good teacher who "went out of his way for students."

No additional information was immediately available.
