I had the duty of trying to keep up with Carson High School Culinary Arts Director Penny Reynolds. She puts NASCAR racer Jeff Gordon to shame.

Listening to Reynolds describe her students and enthusiasm for teaching culinary arts, you begin to understand why the students love this program. Her passion for teaching is reflected in every statement. However, do not think this class is a piece a cake. The students will tell you otherwise.

Reynolds has established a top-rated culinary arts program. In conjunction with the National Restaurant Association, the students involved in the program can obtain articulation credits with 39 U.S. universities and colleges.

This year, Reynolds and 26 students will fly to Providence, R.I., for a weeklong intensive culinary education/training at Johnson and Wales University.

Call Reynolds to schedule your next event through the Culinary Arts Department. Her grant-writing skills and a refurbished booth donated by the Pi-on Plaza have made for a very quaint restaurant at the school. It might be a nice change of pace for your organization's luncheon.

Another function will raise money for students interested in vocational education, but who are unable to afford the extra expenses. The Carson City Kiwanis 2003 golf tournament's proceeds will directly benefit students wanting to pursue welding, automotive, culinary arts or computer courses. To help support these unique programs, get your clubs out and join the fun at Eagle Valley Golf Course.

What: Prizes to include a 2003 GMC Sonoma pickup truck courtesy of Michael Hohl Motors for a hole in one. Prizes for men's and women's shots closest to the hole and longest drive. A barbecued steak lunch follows.

Cost: $90 per player or $360 for a foursome. Includes green fees, cart, barbecue lunch and golf shirt.

Proceeds benefit: Kiwanis Vocational Trades Scholarship funds for allied-trades training.

What: Third annual Springtime Scholarship Dessert, Tea, Auction & Social. Program on antique, museum-quality music boxes; dining on theme-decorated tables and bidding on gift baskets; and browsing in the "Vintage Boutique." Hand-painted note cards and the Chapter N cookbook for sale.

Don't forget your poles: Tommy's annual fishing ferby for ages 2-12 is at the Sparks Marina. Registration 8:30 a.m. sharp Saturday; fun includes hamburgers and hot dogs.
