Bake sale to feed hungry children nets $200 over weekend

A Carson City woman and her neighbors and friends managed to collect slightly more than $200 at a bake sale Saturday to help a national effort to feed hungry children.

Debbie Tull said she was sold out of everything but two small bags of cookies and six muffins before noon. The cash donations equaled the money collected from the sale of cakes, cookies and pies.

Tull was touched by one woman who simply dropped off a "thank you" card for holding the sale and a cash donation. American Legion No. 4 called the day before and also donated items.

"People are just so good in this town and so willing to reach out to each other," Tull said. "People were just very generous with their money and their hearts."

Tull decided to hold the bake sale at Albertson's store in South Carson after reading about the Great American Bake Sale recently launched nationwide to fight childhood hunger. The sale began April 27 and will run until July 22.

Share Our Strength, a leading anti-hunger organization, organized the national fund raiser and will collect and distribute the funds to innovative, successful anti-hunger programs nationwide.

The fund raiser encourages citizens to hold bake sales in communities throughout the country or buy items from a local Great American Bake Sale event.

Saturday's event was so successful that Tull is hoping to hold another sale in June if time allows, she said. She plans to put Saturday's proceeds into a money order and continue to collect donations through the next month before contributing the entire amount to the cause.

Anyone interested in donating can make their checks available to Share Our Strength, and send it to Tull at 728 Sean Drive, Carson City, NV 89701 or call 885-2485.
