Howard J. Fisher, 88, a Yerington resident, died May 15, 2003, at home. He was born Jan. 18, 1915, in Esbon, Kan., to Robert and Alma Mindenhall Fisher.
He moved from Kansas to Modesto, Calif., in 1930, and graduated from high school there.
He then joined the California Conservation Corps and became a civil engineer. He joined the U.S. Army and served during World War II in China and France and received a battlefield commission as a second lieutenant.
After the war, he worked for the Army Corps of Engineers and was involved in the construction of the Folsom Dam near Sacramento.
He moved to Placerville, Calif., and established a real-estate brokerage firm. After the death of his wife, Dorothy, and son, Steven, he traveled the Southwest in a van with his dog Max. He owned a coin shop in Tombstone, Ariz., before moving to Yerington. He was a regular visitor to Casino West.
Among his survivors are his sister and brother-in-law, Roberta and Blair Stevahn; and many nieces and nephews.
A private service will be held at Golden Gate National Cemetery in San Bruno, Calif., with burial next to his wife.
Memorial contributions may be made to American Legion Post 9 in Yerington.
