Learn about pasture management workshop

Looking for something to plant on your property that doesn't require irrigation? Do you have a lot of dust blowing around because you have a plot of bare land?

Learn about the various things that you can plant to provide some ground cover and keep the dust down at a free "Pasture Management Workshop" presented by University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, at 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Douglas County Cooperative Extension office, 1329 Waterloo Lane, Gardnerville.

After meeting at the Cooperative Extension office, the workshop participants will go to two local ranches in the Fish Springs area to see examples of the topics discussed.

Topics will include:

-- Selecting appropriate species for both dry land and irrigated pastures

-- Increasing the forage available to your animals

-- Pasture planting, irrigation and maintenance

-- Weed control

-- Grazing practices

Steve Lewis, Douglas County Extension Educator, will be presenting the workshop that is part of the "Living on the Land" program of University of Nevada Cooperative Extension aimed at helping Carson Valley residents protect their water quality and natural resources. The program is funded by the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection, and is in cooperation with the Natural Resources Conversation Service and the Carson Valley Conservation District.

In the coming months, "Living on the Land" will present more workshops on small ranch planning and management. Those who would like to get on the mailing list or need more information may call O'Farrell at 782-9960.
