120 YEARS AGO

George, the eldest son of Manager John Piper, is said to be a rising scenic painter; in fact, he has for several years produced much of the scenery for the Virginia Opera House. The young man is reported to possess much talent. Fact not generally known is that the Chinese domestics in this town are all kept poor by gambling in the lotteries that are conducted by their countrymen.

100 YEARS AGO

For once the train arrived on time yesterday. It contained the President of the United States, Governor and Mayor Mackey rode with the president (Teddy Roosevelt) in his carriage. "This is about the best yet," he said as he saw the wall of flags and bunting.

70 YEARS AGO

Stewart graduation, President's farewell address, Viola Rupert; valedictory, Bill Andrews; class flower, Pearl Daniels; class prophecy, Josephine Potts and salutary, Norman Johnson.

50 YEARS AGO

Memorial Day services, at Lone Mountain Cemetery, Jack Ross, Carson attorney, to deliver the principle address. Bill Holcomb Jr., of Carson High School, the "Gettysburg Address." Under chairmanship of Harry Becker, who said if weather is bad the ceremony would be held in the civic auditorium.

20 YEARS AGO

State GOP Chairman Curtis Patrick is giving Gov. Richard Bryan and Assembly Democrats a"D minus" for their budget and tax efforts this session. He noted a preposterous 75-cent property tax hike."

10 YEARS AGO

Gov. Bob Miller announced the city of Carson City has been awarded $58,000 from the Nevada Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) program. This was for renovation of two existing buildings at the former Northern Nevada Children's Home to provide a centralized facility for nonprofit youth organizations.
