Deputy in Indian Hills collision responding to 911 hang-up

MINDEN -- A Douglas County sheriff's deputy involved in an early morning collision on Sunday was responding to a domestic dispute hang-up call, according to Lt. Steven Orr.

The deputy, Leland Love, hit a black Toyota 4-runner, driven by 25-year-old Steven Heinz of Gardnerville about 2 a.m.

Heinz said Friday that he was traveling southbound on Highway 395 "and right at the bottom there at Sunridge and Plymouth, I looked to my left and saw a Douglas County Sheriff's Office car coming up pretty fast."

"He blew through the stop sign there without having his lights on."

The incident left Heinz and his passenger, Matt Krystofiak, uninjured, according to early reports. But Heinz said he went to Minden Urgent Care the day after the accident because of lapses in memory.

Heinz' Toyota was hit in the side by Love's 2002 Ford 4-door patrol unit. Heinz said the impact from the sheriff's vehicle sent his car on its side, which he and Krystofiak crawled out from.

Both vehicles were totaled, according to NHP reports. Heinz and Krystofiak both retained consciousness during the accident, Heinz said. Love was cited for failing to yield in the accident.

Orr said Love responded to a call at a Vista Grande Boulevard residence, which is in Indian Hills.

The Douglas County District Attorney's Office will determine whether to file charges. A spokesperson for the attorney's office said Friday accident information has not been received.
