This is Victims of Domestic Violence Month. Kelly Ibarra of the Advocates to End Domestic Violence shelter gave me a tour of the court advocates' office. It has been open since 1999, and has assisted 8,000 victims of domestic violence.
The services provided at the district court building include court accompaniment, assistance with stalking orders, protective orders, legal-assistance referrals and bilingual assistance from interpreters.
The court advocates' office at the courthouse is collecting used cellular phones. If you have a phone you longer need, please take it to Kelly. The phones allow victims to access the 911 system in case of an emergency. The advocates have given out 200 donated cell phones.
Oct. 25 is national Make a Difference Day. Starbucks is teaming up with Hands on Northern Nevada volunteers to put together hygiene kits for homeless children throughout Reno and Carson, Douglas, Washoe, Lyon and Storey counties.
Personal care items are being collected through Oct. 24 at Starbucks Coffee shops throughout the area. Radio station 97.3 KWNZ will announce drop-off areas throughout Northern Nevada. The North Carson Starbucks will have a designated area to drop off items listed below.
The Carson High School Basketball 6th Man Booster Club fund-raiser, Beer and Brats, will have great food and drinks. The delicious sausages are provided by the Sausage Factory. Sports fan will not want to miss the silent auction tickets to the Big Game of Cal vs. Stanford on Nov. 22, with parking pass included; a golf package from Eagle Valley Golf Course; and University of Nevada, Reno, event tickets. A charm bracelet with Senators charm will also be auctioned. Help support the Carson High basketball teams by buying a ticket from a coach or athlete, or stop by the Sugar Pine Cove.
The Children's Museum of Northern Nevada's annual Trick or Treat Time is Oct. 30 and 31. Besides safe trick-or treat-stops, children in costumes can enjoy pumpkin and face painting, have their fortunes told, or knock at doors for candy from Wal-mart and Costco. To sponsor a door, call for information.

Thanks to George Pincock for donating all his clothes to the homeless program. Before heading off to college, George bagged up all his cool clothes, and his mother, Kathy, took them to the Clothes Closet to help other students in Carson. It's great to have such thoughtful young adults throughout our community.
