Deputy resigns after domestic battery arrest

Appeal Staff Writer

A Carson City deputy resigned Monday after his arrest on suspicion of domestic battery.

Javier Omar Moncada, 23, assigned to the jail, was taken into custody Sunday night at 10:25 p.m. after his wife allegedly called police to report he'd hit her and refused to let her call for help.

According to the report, the wife had a cut on her lip.

Sheriff Kenny Furlong said Moncada has been with the department since May after coming from another agency in the state.

"I'm not pleased that a deputy was allegedly involved in an incident that is being investigated," Furlong said. "I've spoken to the officer and did accept his resignation."

Moncada bailed out of jail Monday morning, Furlong said. The matter has been turned over to the Carson City District Attorney.

Under state law, a conviction for domestic battery makes it illegal for someone to carry a weapon.
