SWAT team barricades home

The Carson City Sheriff's Department Special Weapons and Tactics team was called in Saturday to remove a man suspected of battery who refused to come out of a home.

Jorge Carlos Esparza, 30, was arrested on suspicion of felony battery with a deadly weapon and a misdemeanor warrant for criminal contempt, according to sheriff's department reports.

The report states the victim, whose name was not released, was waiting for a ride at 6 a.m. in the 2400 block of Brookside Way when a small red car pulled up. He said a woman asked him to escort her to her house because she was afraid of her boyfriend. As the two approached the door at 4 Hazelwood Court, Esparza came out and hit him on the head, according to the report. Because it was dark, the victim could not see what he was hit with, the report states. He fell back and was also hit on the back and stomach.

He then returned to his house and called 911. The woman followed, then Esparza, a construction worker, pulled up in the red car. Esparza and the woman, whose name was not released, argued in Spanish then went back to 4 Hazelwood, according to the report.

When officers arrived, they knocked on the door and got no response. A search warrant was obtained, and the SWAT team was called in to execute it. A negotiator attempted to make contact with the people inside the home with a megaphone.

When that failed, the SWAT team entered the house. Esparza and the woman were detained. Esparza is being held on $30,000 bail for the battery with a deadly weapon charge and a cash-only bail of $1,055 for criminal contempt.
