Obituary: Robert Dixon Doyle

A memorial service for Robert Dixon Doyle, 81, a longtime Nevada resident, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

Following the service, a reception will be held at the Fernley Golf Course.

Mr. Doyle died Oct. 27, 2003, at his son's home in Fernley. He was born March 12, 1922, in Reno to William M. and Nevada Louise Doyle.

Shortly after his birth, his family moved to Mountain City, where he spent most of his younger years. He ran mustangs and cattle on the Ah-Wa-Hee Desert as a boy then worked in the mines of Mountain City for a few years.

When he turned 18, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served 31U2 years on the U.S. Rainier ammunition ship.

After his discharge, he returned to Reno and married Lonnell J. Glenn.

Mr. Doyle spent most of his career in Nevada's gambling industry. He was a dealer and a pit boss at the Sands and Tropicana in Las Vegas, the Holiday Inn and Riverside in Reno, and the Carson Station and Ormsby House in Carson City.

He was a lifelong cowboy who spent his free time traveling to rodeos and teaching roping and riding to his son and grandchildren.

Among his survivors are his son, Mike; daughter, Wanda; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
