Schwarzenegger planning to attend single debate

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- Actor Arnold Schwarzenegger will participate in only one debate with other recall candidates next month, according to a statement released Sunday.

Rep. David Dreier, co-chair of the actor's campaign, said Schwarzenegger will take part in the California Broadcasters Association's debate slated for the third week of September in Sacramento. The organization has said the televised debate will include the top six candidates who have obtained at least 10 percent support in polls by Sept. 5.

"Our campaign has received numerous invitations from a wide range of news organizations and community groups, which we greatly appreciate, and we have concluded that we will work exclusively with CBA," Dreier said in the statement.

Three other debates are scheduled for September. On Wednesday, Lt. Gov. Cruz Bustamante is expected to join state Sen. Tom McClintock, Peter Ueberroth, Arianna Huffington and Peter Camejo at a debate in Walnut Creek. Bustamante, Huffington and Camejo are also committed to appear at a debate Sept. 9 in Los Angeles.

CNN and the Los Angeles Times will host a debate Sept. 30, but it was not immediately known which candidates will appear.

Ueberroth will hold a press conference Monday to discuss candidate participation in the upcoming debates.
