Construction progresses at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School

So far, construction and children have peacefully coexisted at Bordewich-Bray Elementary School. But operations manager Mike Mitchell is most pleased with what's going on below the surface.

"We feel pretty good that it's going smoothly on the underground portion of the work," Mitchell said. "All the underground conditions we were worried about aren't manifesting, so we're pretty lucky in that regard."

As workers began digging trenches to lay the foundation of the addition to the school, they were concerned about what they'd turn up.

"A lot of times you'll find old utilities that aren't marked or come across bad soil conditions," Mitchell explained. "We didn't find any of that."

He will make a report to the Carson City School Board at tonight's meeting.

"We're on schedule in respect to footings and foundations," he said. "We're actually picking up a day or so on our schedule."

Parents and community members are invited to see the progress first hand at a Hard Hat Dinner planned Friday at the school.

The dinner, sponsored by the Parent-Teacher Association, will begin at 5 p.m. with a book fair going on at the same time. A Dodge drive-a-thon will also be held as a fund-raiser. The school will receive donations for every test drive.

The highlight of the evening will be an update on the construction project and a look ahead to what parents and students can expect throughout the upcoming year.

The addition was funded through a $3.75 million bond passed in November's election. It will replace five portable buildings, consolidating the seven-building campus into one school.

The modular buildings were demolished after three types of toxic mold were discovered within their walls.
