Obituary: Theodore Getter

Memorial services for Theodore "Ted" Getter, 75, a Smith Valley resident for the past year, will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Smith Valley United Methodist Church on Rivers Road in Wellington and at 11 a.m. Friday at Chapel In the Pines on Highway 4 in Arnold, Calif.

Mr. Getter died Aug. 25, 2003, from complications from cancer. He was born Dec. 19, 1927, in Long Beach, Calif., to Aurea Edward and Emily Dobbs Getter.

He graduated from Needles High School.

He then joined the U.S. Navy, in which he was injured in a training accident and honorably discharged.

He attended classes at Mount Diablo Community College while working for Pacific States Aviation. In 1969, he moved to Sacramento, Calif., where he worked for State Farm Insurance.

He joined the Ebbetts Pass Fire District as a volunteer. He served three years as a firefighter and six years as captain at Hathaway Pines Station 3 then at Station 4. He was a charter member of the Ebbetts Pass Moose Lodge No. 1123, Chispa Parlor 139 Native Sons of the Golden West in Murphys and a member of the board of directors for the Murphys Fire District.

He married Dianne in April 2000, and they moved to Smith Valley in May 2002.

He was preceded in death by his brother, James Edward; and sister, Lucille McEachin.

Among his survivors are his wife, Dianne; son and daughter-in-law Ron and Julie of Arnold; sons Brad of Sacramento and Mark Smith of Santa Clara, Calif.; grandson, Paul Smith of Murfreesboro, Tenn.; cousin and husband Marianne and Ernest McCollough of Escondido, Calif.; and first wife. Patricia Master of Auburn, Calif.

Memorial contributions may be made to Barton Memorial Hospital Hospice, DBA Hospice of the Valley, 1617 Water St., Suite K, Minden, NV 89423; or to a local hospice.
