MINDEN -- Steve Weissinger, alluding to charges against him of embezzlement and drunken driving, will formally step down Thursday as chairman of the Douglas County Commission.
"Due to yet-to-be-resolved issues in my personal life, I request in the best interests of Douglas County and yourselves to officially step down as chairman," he wrote in a letter to fellow commissioners.
Weissinger will remain on the board, according to Douglas County Clerk Barbara Reed.
Weissinger was arrested in Carson City on charges of drunken driving Aug. 23. A hearing is set at 10 a.m. Nov. 9.
Weissinger is also awaiting a Nov. 3 trial in El Dorado County California on three counts of misdemeanor embezzlement from his former employer, Raley's Supermarket in South Lake Tahoe.
Through his attorney, William Cole, Weissinger has denied being under the influence and denied the theft charges in court.
Prosecutors in El Dorado County said they have evidence of three incidents in which Weissinger is accused of taking more than $1,000 while he was manager.
Weissinger was selected as chairman in January. Since June, Commissioner Kelly Kite has served as interim chairman.
The commission is scheduled to meet at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at the courtroom of the Douglas County Administration Building at 175 Highway 50 East, Stateline.
Reed said election for a new chairman and vice chairman on the commission's agenda Thursday was prompted by Weissinger's "personal problems."
