Area Boy Scouts are hitting the streets in search of blood and guts. Despite being too early for Halloween, the scouts have a more noble cause than tricking and treating -- saving lives.
The joint effort by troops throughout Northern Nevada is the Eagle Scout project for 14-year-old Dan Sistler of Reno's troop No. 107.
"Through the Boy Scouts and the Living Bank, United Blood Services we are trying to recruit as many blood donors and organ donors as possible," Dan said. "Scouts will be going around recruiting blood and organ donors."
Dan, a Reno High School freshman, said the scouts will most likely approach only those they know.
"I am hoping to get enough blood to last through the holidays through the project," he said. "It's hard to say how many will participate in the recruiting. I hope as many will recruit as possible."
Dan said there are about 4,000 Boy Scouts in the area. Those who collect three pledges for organ and three blood donations will earn an organ donor patch.
"I don't expect all to participate, because it's not required," he said.

"Donating an organ is not that big a deal unless its against your religion because you're dead when you donate an organ," Dan said.
Nyla Emerson, spokeswoman for United Blood Services, said "we have been trying to play catch up on our blood supply all year. It seems everything we get in goes right back out again. This has been the hardest summer we have seen for 13 years."
