A Carson City man admitted Monday he "made the biggest mistake of his life" when he fired seven shots to gain entry into his estranged girlfriend's apartment.
Francisco Montero-Osuna, 22, made the admission through an interpreter as he plead guilty to home invasion with the use of a deadly weapon before District Judge Michael Griffin.
The charge carries a sentence of two to 15 years in prison.
His attorney, Karla Butko of Reno, said she will argue for probation when her client is sentenced Nov. 3.
In exchange for the plea, the Carson City District Attorney's Office dropped charges of assault with a deadly weapon, burglary with a deadly weapon, child endangerment, firing into an occupied dwelling and domestic battery.
Montero-Osuna was arrested Aug. 12.
According to police reports, he shot his way into his estranged girlfriend's apartment in East Carson City after she refused to let him in.
Once inside he threatened to shoot her, then fired a shot into the couch before fleeing.
Police found him a half hour later hiding in a neighbor's apartment. He remains in the Carson City Jail.
Butko said Montero-Osuna was under the influence of methamphetamine at the time of the incident.
"That messes with the mind," she said.
