Carson candy store gets shipment of nostalgic gum

The smell of black licorice, spearmint and cloves is already blanketing the front counter at the Candy Bar.

"The smell brings back memories," said store owner Suzi Meehan-Hunt.

The small Carson store received its shipment of BlackJack, Beemans and Clove gum Thursday. More than 1,000 packs were presold and set aside, but the store stocked extra for people who miss the old flavors.

The Adam's Gum Co. made the flavors, but Warner-Lambert bought the company. It stopped making chewing gum in 1976, after a decline in its popularity.

Warner-Lambert reintroduced the gums through the years as part of special promotions.

Each pack is sold for $1.

The Candy Bar will open a new, larger store at the Carson Valley Plaza on Nov. 1. For the owners, the move is "scary" but they will be able to sell other items at the new site. Meehan-Hunt's husband, Bob, will make chocolate and fudge there.

"Unfortunately, we had to move where the business is going to be, and that shopping center is phenomenal," Meehan-Hunt said.

The 2-year-old Carson store will remain open.
