A Dayton man accused in the sexual assault of a Carson City girl has waived extradition from California and is expected to be back in Nevada sometime this week.
Michael Botelho, 42, is in custody in Susanville on a warrant charging him with three counts of sexual assault, said Washoe County Sheriff's Sgt. David Nikoley.
Botelho will be held in Washoe County Jail.
According to Nikoley, Botelho contacted the 14-year-old girl through a classified ad in a free-distribution paper in which she was offering babysitting services.
On the pretext that she would sit for his children, Botelho allegedly picked her up from her Carson City home on Aug. 7 and took her out to an isolated area at Washoe Lake. For about an hour, he sexually assaulted the girl, before dropping her off in her neighborhood and warning her to be quiet, Nikoley said.
In an attempt to locate Botelho, whom police suspected was trying to flee the country with his wife and two small children, authorities released a description of his vehicle and a photograph.
A woman who saw a news broadcast reported Botelho's truck was at the Frontier Inn Motel in Susanville, Nikoley said.
Botelho was arrested without incident Sept. 16 at the motel. The room was rented by his wife.
The warrant also charges him with kidnapping and battery with intent to commit sexual assault.
