Obituary: Andrew Artz

Andrew MacArthur Artz, 42, died Sept. 25, 2003, in Hollister, Calif., following a long illness.

He was born Sept. 10, 1961, in Carson City, to John and Mary Artz.

He graduated from Reno High School in 1979; attended the University of Nevada, Reno; and graduated at the top of his class from the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center in Glencoe, Ga., in 1977.

Mr. Artz was a law enforcement ranger for the National Parks Service in Pinnacles National Monument in Paicines, Calif., at the time of his death. He had worked for the National Park Service for many years at various national parks and monuments around the country.

He loved the outdoors and was an avid Nordic skier, rock climber, mountain climber and kayaker. He worked in climbing and ski stores in Reno before joining the park service. He loved to teach others to ski and climb and taught many classes.

Among his survivors are his wife, Wendy; son, Jacob; Jacob's mother, Terri Baker; parents; sister, Melinda Artz; and brothers Neal and Alan and their families.

A memorial service was held at Pinnacles National Monument.
