"Children helping children" should be this week's headline.
Sierra Lutheran High School wants to support orphans in Africa. The freshman and sophomore classes host a spaghetti dinner fund-raiser tonight to secure food, water, shelter, clothing and education for the children. World Vision International says it costs $360 per year for one orphan. The classes would like to raise $1,500 - the cost for each group to sponsor one child for a year.
Carson High School's Class of 2004 has really stepped up to the plate on some great projects to help fellow students. On Wednesday, Adrienne Jordan's Middle and High School Clothing Drive will help needy students pick out some really cool clothing, shoes and hygiene kits. If you know of a child in middle or high school who might be interested, make sure they come.
CHS senior Bryan Upton is trying to get more youths involved in golf. He is organizing a golf club drive at three of our local courses for children who are unable to obtain a set. If you have some clubs that have been sitting around collecting dust, please drop them off. If you would like to purchase a student punch card at any of the courses, that would be great, too.
At Carson City Library, students in K-fifth grade are invited to join R.E.A.D., a monthly reading program presented by PET Network of North Lake Tahoe and Delta Society Pet Partners. The children will hear pet stories and discuss responsible pet ownership. They will also read one-on-one to a certified therapy animal.
The American Lung Association of Nevada is gearing up for summer camp. Medically trained volunteers are needed now to help at the Lake Tahoe four-day camp or one-day camps. The one-day asthma awareness Carson Camp is July 23 at Mills Park and teaches children about the seriousness of disease in a fun camp atmosphere. Included will be information about nonallergenic diets, medication and respiratory therapy.
The American Red Cross will conduct a class titled "Introduction to Disaster Services" to provide basic information about Red Cross services and volunteer opportunities and training in Carson City, Dayton and Douglas county.
At the Elks Lodge's annual Tommy's Fish Fry, all the proceeds will go to Safe Haven. The program helps provide immediate temporary safe homes for battered and abused children throughout our state. If you want some great hush puppies, now you know where to go.
The Children in Transition Easter Shoe Program was again a huge success. To everyone who helped purchase more than 617 pairs of shoes, thank you. I also want thank the principals at the elementary schools and their entire staffs. SBC Pioneers and Capital City Loans staff had some very quality moments in fitting the students in shoes.
