Sherwin Herman Kettenburg

A graveside service for Sherwin "Chevy" Herman Kettenburg, a lifetime Gardnerville resident, will be at 3:30 p.m. today at the Garden Cemetery.

Mr. Kettenburg died April 1, 2004, at his home of cancer. He was born in December 1921 in Gardnerville at the Carson Valley Hospital (now known as the Logan Building) to Sophie and August Kettenburg.

He lived and worked with his parents on a dairy farm on the west side of Carson Valley for 22 years. He attended Mottsville County School, Minden Elementary and graduated from Douglas High School in 1939.

He married Eloise Sayre April 15, 1944.

Mr. Kettenburg worked as a mechanic for Jim Darough at the Midland Garage for 18 years and then worked for the Nevada State Highway Department from 1963 to 1982. He enjoyed cars, helping people with their cars and trucks, climbing, hiking, preserving Nevada parks, native animals and birds. He restored old cars, clocks and created artwork from rocks he collected.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

Among his survivors are his wife of nearly 59 years; daughters Cheryl and Charlene; five grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Walton's Douglas County Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.
