Club fund-raisers, donations aid student athletes, promgoers

by Kim Riggs

The great thing about Carson City and youth sports is the support from all the merchants. All gift certificates or merchandise donated for fund-raisers is greatly appreciated by every child in the programs.

Steve Smallman sent me an e-mail several weeks ago about a new program that helps children get sports equipment. Having been an all-star coach for Little League for many years, Steve remembers that not all the children can afford a pair of baseball cleats or bat every season.

Steve and Debbie Smallman spent many hours at Governor's Field coaching their son, Nick, or working in the snack bar to help the league raise funds for helmets, bats and safety equipment. Steve requested help from corporations. Last week, Nike Corp. sent the first sports equipment request to the Carson High School Track team.

Coach Todd Ackerman will be surprised Tuesday when he receives new Nike cleats. Thanks, Steve, from CHS track athletes, and thanks to Jeff Creelman Insurance for paying the shipping cost for the shoes.

The first weekend of May is Carson High School's Prom Night. Young ladies can look at free prom dresses, courtesy of Marina Works and Kathy Block, CHS nurses. Girls can try on dresses after school in the nurses' office.

If you have an old prom dress you to donate, look below.

The Sugar Pine Cove will give an additional 10 percent off to CHS students who need a prom boutonniere or corsage. If you need a tuxedo, Mark Frady of Mercury Cleaners will give a discount of $49.95 for their tuxes.

To help a student attend the prom, purchase a ticket for him or her. Contact Cheryl Stoddard at the school. Thanks to Adrienne Jordan's senior project, four girls will attend the prom in very beautiful gowns.

Get the clubs out to help the Carson High School golf team with a fund-raiser. The Eagle Valley Men's Golf Club is hosting its annual golf tournament Saturday to help the players.

President Marty Ramirez invites the community to help support up-and-coming players. Friday night, they will have a no-host, pre-tournament cocktail party at the course. You can purchase raffle tickets and play Calcutta.

This event is open to the public - you need not be a member of the club, or even a man, to enter.

American Youth Soccer Organization has gone high tech with online signups. If you don't own a computer, log in at the library. The group will also host two walk-in signups at Carson High School.

Armed Forces Day is time to "Give a Pint and Get a Dog." Free hot dogs and soft drinks will be given to every blood donor, compliments of Sunset Rotary.
