Kenneth Cecil Crowley

A memorial service for Kenneth Cecil Crowley, 79, a Schurz resident for the past 40 years, will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Walker River Tribal Gymnasium in Schurz.

Mr. Crowley died April 16, 2004, of cancer. He was born Nov. 12, 1924, in Haverhill, Mass., to Edward and Hazel Tyler Crowley and had 12 brothers and sisters.

He left high school to join the U.S. Marines at age 17. During World War II, he was involved in action on Guadalcanal and in North Africa.

He married Norma Joanne Voorhees in 1953 in Los Angeles.

Mr. Crowley was a welder and later a mason. He was active in the Schurz community, helping to establish Boy Scout Troop 402 and constructing the local TV booster station. He was a lifetime member of the Marines 1st Battalion, Disabled American Veterans, Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion.

Among his survivors are his wife of Schurz; son, Kenneth; daughters Betti Jo and Karen Ann; eight grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Burial of cremains will be in the Schurz Cemetery with military honors.

Freitas Rupracht Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
