The Carson High School softball team lost both ends of its Sierra League doubleheader at home against Wooster, but that wasn't necessarily the bad news for the Senators on Saturday.
Another potential setback came when ace pitcher Mandy Carvin, who had been sidelined the past two weeks due to tendinitis in her right shoulder, was only able to throw four innings in game one before she had to retire for the day.
"It started to tighten up so we took her out," Carson coach Scott Vickrey said. "Our main concern now is resting Mandy and getting her healthy because we have some big games coming up."
The four-time defending 4A state champion Wooster Colts won both ends of the doubleheader against Carson, 8-2 and 11-1.
When Carvin had to leave the game, Liz Rankl moved over from shortstop to pitch the rest of the way for Carson in game one. Rankl also started game two and pitched until Lindsay Farnworth came on in the third. Farnworth was unavailable earlier in the day because of academic testing.
Wooster took charge in the opener by scoring three runs in the second inning and four runs in the sixth.
Jessica Ashbaugh led Carson offensively as she hit 2-for-3 with a two-run double in the sixth inning. Jessica Grant also hit a double in the fifth inning for the Senators.
In game two, Wooster scored five runs in the second inning to take charge. Andrea Lazzari hit 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double and six RBIs for the Colts.
Carson (4-6 league, 9-9 overall) returns to action Thursday with a nonleague game at Fallon, then visits Reno for a league doubleheader on Friday.
