Silver Springs man dies in car crash

A Silver Springs man was killed Tuesday morning when he pulled into the path of oncoming traffic two miles west of Silver Springs, police said.

William Crawford, 81, was northbound on Onyx Street about 8:10 a.m. approaching Highway 50 East when he stopped at a stop sign, then started to cross the highway.

"It appears he didn't see the other vehicle," said Trooper Todd Hartline of the Nevada Highway Patrol.

Crawford's 1993 Oldsmobile was struck by an eastbound 1991 Dodge pickup driven by Jason Perreault, 27 of Carson City.

According to Hartline, Perreault left several feet of "locked-wheel skid marks in an attempt to avoid a collision."

The front of the pickup truck hit the left side of the Oldsmobile in the area of the driver's door.

Crawford was taken by CareFlight helicopter to Washoe Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries. Neither Perreault, nor his passenger were injured.

Hartline said neither driver was wearing a seatbelt. Alcohol and drugs are not believed to be a factor.
