Carson City selects grant recipients

Several organizations that serve Carson City residents were granted nearly $300,000 to continue programs.

City supervisors doled out funds Tuesday to groups that serve children, seniors and low-income residents, conservation groups, the library foundation, arts and the Nevada Day Parade.

"Without your help, this event would not happen," said Ron Bowman, president of Nevada Day Inc.

This year's theme for the state parade will be "Entertainment Nevada Style," possibly featuring entertainers from Las Vegas, Bowman said.

The city awarded the parade $5,000 to pay for operating costs Wednesday.

Each year, city supervisors provide a small amount of funding using general fund monies for nonprofit organizations who serve residents. This year, 20 groups applied.

Groups that walked away with the majority of funding was the Community Council on Youth ($103,000) and the Community Counseling Center ($50,000).

The youth council provides assistance to city youth agencies through identification, prioritization and implementation of programs.

The counseling center provides housing alcohol and drug detoxification and civil protective custody services and other social programs.
