Church serves sundaes Sunday

Loads of ice cream will be scooped up and licked away Sunday at the eighth annual St. Benedict Society of Corpus Christi Catholic Community Ice Cream Social.

What began as a simple get-together for the congregation has grown to an event with many more activities to which the public is invited.

"It's an annual event the parish puts on for our church building fund," said George Bishop, minister of the St. Benedict Society.

"We coordinate this particular event. It involves the whole congregation, but the society coordinates it.

"We will also be selling raffle tickets, have door prizes throughout the afternoon and a 50/50 cash raffle."

Two years ago, the winner of the 50/50 drawing received about $1,500.

Bishop said children's games will also be available, many comparable to those of a carnival midway. Adults can also play bingo.

"We'll also have a cakewalk, a children's bounce house, and we're going to have bingo."

Ice cream for the event has been donated by individuals and a couple of local businesses.

"We've got the ice cream covered," Bishop said.

"We'll have a good selection of flavors. We'll also be making sundaes and root beer floats, in addition to individual scoops."

Bishop said a nice selection will also be available on the food menu.

The St. Benedict Society is a service organization whose members work and pray on behalf of the community. Among other activities, members also distribute Christmas baskets to needy families and do yard cleanups.

Tickets for the 50/50 drawing will be sold at the church Sunday.
