Roy Carroll Wendelbo

Roy Carroll Wendelbo, 95, a Carson City resident for the past five years, died Dec. 6, 2004, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

He was born Oct. 12, 1909, in Tiburon, Calif., on the Tropic Bird, a beached Alaska Packer sailing vessel.

He married Bernice De Sanno in 1935. They divorced in 1960.

He married Lilia Diaz in 1961.

During the Depression of the 1930s, he was employed at Encinal Terminal in Alameda, Calif., as a stevedore and promoted to dock superintendent. Working as much as 18 hours a day, he supported his parents, two brothers and four sisters.

As a young man, he enjoyed his 1919 Buick and Willy's Night, traveling, hiking and fishing in Yosemite and Kings Canyon.

At the outbreak of World War II, he became general manager of De Sanno Foundry & Machine Co. in Oakland, Calif.

After moving to Carson City from Grants Pass, Ore., he enjoyed reading and playing the slots. During the last five years, he maintained his fitness by walking two miles daily. He slipped on the ice two days before his death.

He was preceded in death by his son, George, and brothers Lloyd and George and sisters Agnes, Helen and Florence.

Among his survivors are his wife Lilia; son, Lee; daughter-in-law, Courtney; granddaughter Amanda and grandson Morgan.

Cremation will be at FitzHenry's Crematory.
