Tips for surviving cabin fever during winter break

What can you do now that the excitement of Christmas is over? The children have defeated that new video game a hundred times, and cabin fever is creeping in. Youth Services Director Cory King has some great activities planned at the Carson City Library this week.

Tuesday, children 4 to 8 and their families are invited to am evening of stories dramatized through a readers' theater while others will be read from picture books. There will also be songs and a special treat for attendees.

Thursday, teenagers who enjoy poetry, lyrics and the spoken word can join in "Espresso Yourself: A Teen Poetry Open Mic." Participants may read original or previously published poetry and lyrics. Both programs are produced by Teens Embracing Reading in Carson, the Library's teen advisory board.

Mile High Jazz Band presents "Cool Jazz in January" with vocalist Sheryl Adams at the fourth annual big-band event at Comma Coffee. The group is a 17-member band that performs monthly at Comma. It plays music in the spirit of Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Woody Herman and more contemporary jazz styles. Performances are funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.

BACStage Kids and Brewery Arts Center presents "Honk Jr." Don't miss this delightful tale of Ugly, Ida, Drake, the ducklings, the cat and all the characters in this contemporary re-telling of Hans Christian Andersen's "The Ugly Duckling." This production features children ages 6-16 from Carson City, Carson Valley, Reno/Sparks, Dayton, Yerington, Lake Tahoe and beyond. The play is directed by Domenic Procaccini II with musical direction by Ann Libby and choreography by Tara Rispin.

The "Carson City Emblem Club No. 507 presents the 9th annual Charity Bowling Tournament Jan. 30 at the Piñon Plaza bowling center. Five-person teams cost $15 per person. Support the project for hearing-impaired children in Carson City.
