Jogger's family asks for driver's response

INCLINE VILLAGE - Family members pleaded Thursday for some response from the unknown driver of a vehicle that killed resident Joe Borgerding on Feb. 10 as he jogged along the shoulder of Mount Rose Highway.

"I implore of you, please see it in your heart and your conscience to avail yourself to us," said Borgerding's daughter, Ann Marie Frykberg. "Let us know that you were the victim of circumstance and our hearts will be with you."

Borgerding was found at 6:45 a.m. that day near the intersection with McCourry Boulevard by a crew member of the Nevada Department of Transportation.

Law enforcement officials said several efforts to find the vehicle, identified as a large Chevrolet by debris left at the scene, so far have come up empty.

Greg Lubbe, commander of the Incline substation of the Washoe County Sheriff's Office, said deputies checked videotape from casino cameras in Crystal Bay and South Shore but didn't spot a suspicious vehicle.

That eliminates two routes the vehicle might have taken as it left the scene of the accident.

The large Chevy could be parked in a garage in Incline, it could have headed toward Carson City, or it could have turned around and gone back toward Reno.

Because of the lack of solid leads on the case, the Borgerding family presented their plea to the public Thursday morning from the Nevada Highway Patrol headquarters in Reno.

Frykberg presented a letter in which she addressed the driver who killed her father. Her words told of the family's compassion for the driver and the family's great loss as well as a plea that whoever it is muster the courage to come forward and admit a mistake.

"I don't hate you," Frykberg wrote. "I just want you to know and understand what we are now missing. Our family has a hole in it."

The Nevada Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division in Reno hosted the press conference. Capt. Jackie Sandage, commander of special operations for the Northern Command of the Nevada Highway Patrol, recapped the fatal accident. Ann Marie was accompanied by her mother Barbara Borgerding and her husband, Scott Frykberg.
