Congratulations to the Carson High School basketball team for winning the annual Capital Classic Tournament Wednesday night in double over-time against the McQueen Lancers. The Carson boys kept everybody on the edge of their seats.
A special thank you goes to Lions club members who volunteer to run the tournament and provide a snack bar for the out-of-state and local spectators. The proceeds help raise money for the basketball program.
The varsity boys dug in deeply to pull out a huge win and bring home the trophy that hasn't been in our possession since 1995. Kudos to the coaching staff and the Lions for a great event - and of course to the entire varsity team.
Speaking of basketball, the Carson City Elks Lodge recently held its annual Hoop Shot at Carson Middle School. Afterwards, children and parents were treated to hot dogs and hamburgers at the lodge. All participants were presented with certificates and the winners with trophies.

The players will represent Carson City at the District Hoop Shoot this month. Thanks go to Carson Middle School and its staff and volunteers who helped with this year's shoot.
Mark your calendars now for an event that always sells out because it aids so many people fighting cancer.
The ninth annual Winter Wine & All That Jazz is Jan. 17. Come enjoy wine, cheese and fruit tables, and fine jazz at the Carson Nugget ballroom while helping the Carson Advocates for Cancer Care.
This is the advocates' major fund-raiser for the year and helps cancer patients without medical insurance. Last year, more than 50 wines were poured from 26 wineries, and the funds raised went to help people for whom Medicare and Medicaid often won't cover medications associated with cancer. Carson Advocates pays those bills and, in some cases, will pay insurance premiums.
The Carson Advocates for Cancer Care promotes education and puts cancer victims in touch with those who've had the disease. The not-for-profit organization also offers services to cancer patients in Storey, Douglas, Churchill and Lyon counties.
