Mile High-Carson High jazz extravaganza raises funds for trip

To raise money for the Carson High Jazz Band, band members will perform under the leadership of the Mile High Jazz Band professional ensemble. The concerts are funded in part by a grant from the Nevada Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts. Get your tickets early and help support the jazz band's efforts to go to the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.

The big-band Mile High Jazz Band includes 16 instrumentalists and vocalist Sheryl Adams. It has been performed since 1997. The group features music in the Count Basie, Duke Ellington, and Woody Herman tradition, as well as more contemporary styles, selected from a repertoire of more than 100 tunes. They play ballads; high-powered jazz tunes; and dance music arranged by Sammy Nestico, Lennie Niehaus, Mark Taylor, and other greats. They play monthly at Comma Coffee in Carson City for listening and dancing and won the Taste of Downtown's "Best Band" award in 2002.

To help another great local program, clean your fabric out and give it to the annual Great 4-H Fabric Sale. It will be at the Fuji Park Exhibit Hall and open to the public on Feb. 21. To donate fabric, look below; to shop for fabric, I will keep you posted.

4-H coordinator Jill Tingey needs volunteers to set up and assist with the sale. You can help through the University of Nevada Reno Cooperative Extension's Web site listed below.

Some of the upcoming Extension events are Washoe County's Small Animal Show, Douglas County's Leader Fun Night and the Comstock Coyotes 4-H Club's Diving Into Certification.

The Eagle Valley Golf Course had wind damage to its driving range net, which fell on two of the older tree in the East course. With the fall planting of 32 trees bought and planted with funds raised by community donations it looks beautiful, but course staff is thinking of purchasing more trees, instead of another net, to screen the driving range.
