Garth Alfred Longtin, 83, a 16-year Minden/Gardnerville resident, died of heart failure at Carson-Tahoe Hospital on Jan. 22, 2004.
He was born March 19, 1920 in East Jordan, Mich., to Fred A. and Sue E. Bala Longtin. He received a bachelor of science degree in mining engineering from the Manson School of Mines in Michigan's Upper Penninsula.
After graduating, he worked in Bolivia for the Aramayo Mining Co., until civil unrest closed the mine.
He worked for Alcoa and for Kaiser Aluminum and Chemical Corp. for 43 years, including in Central and South America.
Mr. Longtin moved to Minden/Gardnerville in 1988 after brief stays in Flagstaff, Ariz., and Hilo, Hawaii. Before that, he lived in Danville, Calif., and various South American countries.
He is preceded in death by his wife and Ross Elliot Longtin.
Mr. Longtin is survived by daughters Jean Ross Mackenzie of Kentfield, Calif., and Margaret Sue Ortiz of San Jose, Calif.; sons John Alfred of Spotsylvania, Va., Garth Alan of San Jose and Bruce Alexander of Concord, Calif.; brother, Jack of Ocala, Fla.; sister, Ardis Barrows of Laguna Hills, Calif.; and 13 grandchildren.
Capital City Cremation and Burial Society is in charge of arrangements.
