First, I would like to take a moment to acknowledge the wonderful job all the firefighters did to protect so many homes.
I got to see a miraculous effort at Ash Canyon, until the Sheriff's Department threatened to arrest me unless I left. Thinking that they might know more, I listened and headed down the hill a safe distance away from the intense flames and said a prayer.
To my amazement, we walked back in a couple hours later, and not one home had been lost. Firefighters, thank you is not enough for putting your lives on the line, but it's a start.

Thursday, Cory King is presenting Teen Pizza Night at the Carson City Library for grades 6 and up.
The annual Carson High School Basketball Camp helps boys and girls dial in some great fundamentals with coaches Bruce Barnes and Carlos Mendeguia. The CHS varsity boys team will be there to help teach and give encouragement. Don't wait to sign up.
The regional chili cookoff is at Glen Eagles restaurant this weekend. Proceeds help local children at the Boys & Girls Club of Western Nevada. Besides buying a chili-tasting kit, the public is invited to stop by and have lunch and dinner of burgers and hot dogs. There will be live music and a dunk tank featuring local celebrities.
I received an e-mail from Rob Love about the third annual Nevada State Prison Art Show. Several readers called me last year to thank me for putting this event in the paper. First, they didn't know the program existed, and, second, they found marvelous art.
Prisoners in this program are giving back restitution by creating art, selling it back to the public then helping others in our community. Last year, the inmates contributed $3,500 to Empire Elementary School.
Check out the rock art, leather craft, paintings, jewelry, American Indian art, woodwork, children's furniture and stuffed animals.
Carson City Assemblyman Ron Knecht will speak at the Carson City Republicans Tuesday.
