Waterfalls, fires don't really mix

Flames licked at the heels of the firefighters as they tried to get a handle on the Waterfall fire, a rather incongruous name, it seems to us, since water and fire don't mix.

Heroes all ... firefighters, police, health-care workers, pals of pets, support groups, families, friends, strangers, you can add your own names ... countless people stepping forward to assist in any way they could. As the TV commercial goes ... "priceless."

The media came through with great coverage, even if Channel 8's John Tyson did get singed (he's OK) ... Channel 2 had great coverage (as did the Nevada Appeal and Reno Gazette-Journal), even though Channel 4 got the video of Sheriff Furlong and a deputy chasing the jerk who ran a roadblock ... way to go, guys ... but, we missed KPTL giving us "live coverage" like they used to in the "old days." ...

All of Carson City should be patted on the back for the way it "came through" for everyone who needed it ... food, money, water, time, you name it ... and the friends who helped people evacuate, graciously and unasked ... no, they didn't just come and clean out the house "unasked," but came over when it was announced that the area had to be evacuated ... actually if anybody wants to clean out our houses, just give us a minute. ...

Our hearts go out to those who lost their homes ... we can only hope that they were able to save their valuable mementos in time, and can rebuild with them in the future. ...

St. Teresa's is saying good-bye to Father Bob Chorey, who is being transferred to Fernley in a couple of weeks ... they will sorely miss him. A former geologist, Father Bob will also be able to pursue his old profession with a vengeance ... they have lots of rocks out there. Father Angeles DeLeon will replace him...so while we wish Fr. Bob all the best, and good luck, we welcome Fr. Angeles, and wish him good luck as well (with Carolyn in the parish, he'll need it). ...

We know a man, who shall be nameless (but whose initials are TM), who went to Smith's a while back to pick up a large sheet cake for a party. The wind was blowing very hard, and he was having a hard time balancing the cake out to the car.

Oh, he got there all right, but when he did, he realized he didn't have a spare hand with which to open the door. Just then, a lady came along and asked if she could be of help. He said, "Yes, ma'am ... if you could just open the door, that would help a lot."

"I'm sorry, sir, but the door is locked ... where are the keys?"

"They're in my pocket ... " Whereupon the people in the parking lot were treated to a very uncomfortable lady searching the pants pocket of a then very antsy man. We're pleased to report she found the keys without incident, and the cake ended up safely in the car. We're also pleased to report that we all snickered happily ever after. ...

It's summer ... it's hot ... it's time for "Water Fights!" Warren Engine Company No. 1 is supposed to host (I'd check with them first, since they have been a "little busy" lately) a Fire Muster on Saturday at 2525 S. Carson St. (the old National Guard Armory) from 9 a.m. 'til ?

They'll have hose carts, bucket brigade, motorized and other events, plus food, drink and prizes ... and the old "27" Seagrave will be on display. Everybody's welcome to come on down, have fun, and get wet. ...

While all this is going on ... don't forget some other good stuff ... the Carson-Tahoe Hospital Auxiliary is having a wonderful affair this Saturday from 10 to 4 at 3075 College Drive ... it's "Cruisin' in Carson ... 50's Style!" ... and will show off Garth Richard's gorgeous collection of cars and memorabilia.

There will also be an appearance by "Elvis" (we knew he wasn't dead), food and drink, and a silent auction ... $25 per person ... and it all goes to a great cause, the new Carson-Tahoe Cancer Center. Uh, uh, uh ... we're all shook up. ...

The Lone Pine Lawman (Ron McKimmey), Carson Kate (Barbara Reed) and the Railroad Kid (Reed Lequerica) will be on hand at the Nevada State Railroad Museum steamup on July 31 and Aug. 1 for some fine rope twirlin' and gun slingin' ... leave yur valuables at home, 'cuz thar's desperadoes around ("Horribly Handsome Harding" being one of them). ...

Somebody just called and had the effrontery to tell Maizie how the fire started ... it was from all the candles on her birthday cake ... comedian ... bah!

Again, thanks to everyone who helped fight the fire, on and behind the lines ... you're all terrific. ...
