Pancakes can fill your belly, but the proceeds can fill book shelves today at the Carson City Library's Kiwanis/Slot World Breakfast for Books benefit 8-11 a.m. in the gymnasium at the Carson City Community Center.
Hosted by the Kiwanis Club of Carson City and sponsored by Slot World Casino, this annual event is a fundraiser for the library's "Discover New Trails ... Read," Youth Summer Reading Program.
"How many cartoon reruns can you watch?" asked Corey King, the library's youth program director. "If kids dangle a toe in the library this summer, just like they would try out a pool, they will find that, like the pool, its cool, refreshing, exciting and fun."
The summer reading program includes reading, computer games, prizes and activities for children ages 5 to 15, King said.
Entertainment at the breakfast includes storyteller Bob Kanegis at 10 a.m., face painting and more.
Children and teens may sign up for the summer reading program during today's event, and the Friends of the Carson City Library will host a book sale.
"Serving the children of the world is one of our club's missions," said Kiwanis President Mike Crossley. "We can think of no better way to do that than by enabling kids to enjoy reading."
The community center is located at the corner of Roop and William streets.
