Teen killed in Lyon off-road accident

A 14-year-old Silver Springs boy was killed early Saturday morning when a vehicle rolled over on a Bureau of Land management road in Lyon County.

The vehicle had four occupants - all from Silver Springs - when it crashed at about 1 a.m. Saturday, according to authorities. The accident occurred about two and half miles off Hackberry Street north of Highway 50 East in Silver Springs.

The 14-year-old, whose name is being withheld pending notification of family, was pronounced dead at the scene. The other three were transported by rescue helicopter to Washoe Medical Center in Reno.

Christopher Calibro, 27, was driving the vehicle, according to authorities. He was ready to be released from the hospital at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Deputies were called in to pick him up and transport him to Lyon County Jail where he was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence causing death, according to Lyon County Sheriff's Sgt. Russ Cadwallader.

The condition of the other two was not known by deputies on Saturday.

The accident was first reported to the Nevada Highway Patrol by one of the injured at the scene who used a cell phone, Cadwallader said. A later call was placed by one of the injured who walked to a nearby residence and asked to use their phone.

Both alcohol and excessive speed are suspected to be factors in the crash, according to Sgt. Shane Lott.

An investigation is ongoing.
