A wet, sloppy Sierra storm dumped several inches of snow in the valleys Tuesday, getting March off to a good start toward making up for a disappointing February.
Areas north and east of Carson City received up to a foot of snow, with as much as 3 inches falling in Dayton Valley.
Tom Cylke of the National Weather Service said Carson City received .08 inches of moisture from the storm, but that up in Ash Canyon at about 8,000 feet, the moisture content was closer to a half inch.
Cylke said cloudy skies will depart from western Nevada beginning today, with a possibility of temperatures in the 60s by this weekend.
The snowpack feeding the Carson River is at 117 percent of average. Precipitation in Carson City this year was about half of average as of 5 p.m. Tuesday.
On Tuesday, some areas in the outlying areas of Reno reported up to a foot of snow, while the city itself received from 4 to 6 inches.
Travel restrictions were in place across the Northern Nevada region early Tuesday, including a 40-mile stretch over the Sierra on Interstate 80 from just west of the Reno city limits to Kingvale, Calif.
Chains or snow tires also were required on I-80 from Fernley east of Reno to Lovelock; and on U.S. 395 from Reno north to the California line and south to Carson City, and from Gardnerville to Topaz Lake.
Mountain roads around Lake Tahoe all required chains or snow tires, including U.S. 50 over Donner Summit, as did roads in portions of eastern Nevada around Elko.
No major accidents were reported.
