Basketball game a success for charity

Every year the Nevada Association of Student Councils donates thousands of dollars to the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

Year after year, Carson High School Student Council has led Nevada in the most money raised for the organization.

Make-A-Wish's mission is "to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy."

Although Carson High led the state in the amount donated, the amount of donations has dropped drastically in the past year.

After hearing a little girl speak, the student council decided that the amount of money raised last year was not enough.

That's why we held a student vs. teacher basketball game Wednesday night.

The teachers barely squeezed by to win in overtime by two points. The game was, ummm, interesting to say the least.

Students attended the game not just to cheer on their friends - for there were many students at the game that normally don't come out to high school functions. I'm sure they were all pleased with what they saw.

It was an interesting game with a few "controversial" calls - the clock "magically" stopping, a four-minute overtime and restarting the game with only nine seconds left.

Although the game was different, this will definitely become an annual event to attract the entire community.

Thanks to more than 150 spectators, many generous donations and a half-time shoot-out, a total of $541.05 was raised. This will be added to the $120 already raised this year.

Two more Make-A-Wish fund-raisers are coming this week:

n The Senior Auction, where different high school seniors will be auctioned off to work for three hours, will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday in Senator Square.

n The Make-A-Wish Fun Run is March 21 at 8:30 a.m. This two-mile run, two-mile walk or 10k run is sponsored by Fleet Feat and, again, all the money raised will be donated to Make-A-Wish.
