Wolf Pack's party is oneto remember

"The party's over, but the memory lingers on ...."

How nice it was, until the dance ended abruptly ... the Nevada Wolf Pack did us all proud, and we expect them to be back next year ... but, Maizie hopes that by the time you read this, the Kansas Jayhawks will have made it to the Final Four! Go KU! (if not, she'll be crying in her glass of water.)

Speaking of sports ... Steve Garvey will be at the Carson City Community Center tomorrow night to raise funds for the WNCC Wildcats (call 445-3240 for info and tickets) ... and we noticed that the Appeal had many of the silent auction items listed in the paper. We thought it shocking that they didn't list the most important item: a breakfast for two at the Crackerbox with us ... or maybe that was being saved for a "special surprise," and we just blew it ... we're really sorry ...

Great letter in the paper from 12-year-old Tracy Morris, who noticed that the flags at the Veterans Memorial in Mills Park looked tattered and worn and thought they should be replaced. It's nice to see a young lady who cares for and respects our flags ...

And speaking of which ... we called Robin Williamson, one of our city supervisors who's on the C-Hill Flag committee, to see what was going on with that project. She says they have been working hard, that the panels have been painted with a matte finish (to satisfy Forest Service requirements), the welding crews are working hard putting things together ... though they still have 55 holes to drill to anchor the flag ... but everyone has been very cooperative.

Credit goes to Josh and Sara Buscay, Todd Jennings, Gil Ayarbe, Mike Roach, "Somebody" Costello (Maizie can't read her own handwriting ... so she apologizes) and the prison honor crews for all their help. Pretty soon we can say, "The Flag is back!" Hoorah!

Another letter from Louise Carmack caught our eye ... she shamed Las Vegas for wanting more water .... "You do live in the desert, duh." Right on ... every time we go down there (and this applies to anywhere in Nevada), we see new fountains, ponds, lawns and swimming pools ... growth is rampant ... but they just keep building .... We hate to tell 'em, but 40 days and 40 nights of flooding ain't gonna happen ... so do the Nancy Reagan thing, and "Just say no!"

Are the local sports books giving odds on what will cost the most or take the longest to complete ... the freeway or the Ormsby House? Betcha they aren't ... but maybe they should ...

Have you noticed that there are more "Quick Money," "Check Cashing" and "Rent-to-Own" places coming into Carson? They are usually the precursors of XXX shows and "adult theaters' '... all reminiscent of dying inner cities ... we hope the city manager and supervisors are watching this trend ...

We see that Mayor Ray Masayko will have former mayor, Marv Teixeira, running against him if he decides to re-up, and thought it would be fun if all our ex-mayors entered the race ... that would make it a real "mayoral" race ...

Steve Vandenschnerger, 'er, Vandenbugger, 'er, whatever (actually, "Van Denburgh," reeling from March Madness euphoria, no doubt), noticed a great story in the Appeal last week when sportswriter Dave Price wrote about going to his son's graduation in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo. ... "Round-trip ticket on Southwest Airlines between Reno and St. Louis: $318. Regular gasoline in Missouri: $1.60 (give or take a few cents). An adult tram ticket on the St. Louis Gateway Arch: $8. The opportunity to see your child step into adulthood: Priceless." (Pvt. Kristopher Price graduated from the U.S. Army Engineer's school last week ... congratulations ...)

Today is "Help Your Local Sheriff Day" (we just invented it, so we are "helping" them) ... the Sheriff's Office wants to put a banner across Carson Street when its open house occurs in May, but it costs more than $500 ... so if you'd like to help sponsor a banner, please call Mary Wolkomir at 887-2020, ext. 1907, and we'll see you get an extra free hot dog at the open house ...

And one more ... Janet Swobe was sitting on her comfy exercycle the other day watching TV, when she realized that if she pedaled it, it would do her more good ... she's so smart ... (draw conceptually challenged grin here _______)
