A conversation with Fred Perdomo

Carson City School District officials will present Perdomo to the school board tonight for approval as Carson High School's principal next year.

What attracted you to education in the first place?

Perdomo: A passion to teach geography. Geography was and is a subject that has existed in the shadow of history classes. I love working with students. Their energy and enthusiasm is invigorating.

What do you see as the greatest challenge facing the principal of Carson High School in upcoming years?

Perdomo: To meet or exceed the mandates from No Child Left Behind.

What do you most look forward to in the new job?

Perdomo: The challenge. I have my own set of coordinates, that is, I know the direction that the school needs to take. However, this school is very large, and like a super tanker or aircraft carrier, course changes take time.

What piece of advice would you like students and staff to most remember you by?

Perdomo: Love your job and you will never work a day in your life.

How big of a role has family played in your success in education?

Perdomo: My family is the main reason for my success today. They recognized my potential way before I did. It was their encouragement that gave me the confidence to aspire to the next level in education.

Will you maintain the policy of not allowing students to participate in graduation ceremonies who have not passed the proficiency exam?

Perdomo: Yes! It was the unanimous decision of the Carson High School staff.

You love to fly fish. Why?

Perdomo: It is the challenge. It requires total concentration, knowledge and a degree of skill. It is very similar to meditation in that I leave a stream or lake totally relaxed.

What is something people may not know about you but should?

Perdomo: I am shy.
