Carson City officials will hold a public workshop at the Community Center lobby from 4-6 p.m. today on a draft 2004 Regional Transportation Plan to begin a 30 day public comment period.
"If you ask 10 people what a transportation plan is, you will probably receive 10 different answers," said John Flansberg, deputy city engineer. "Some think it deals with public transportation or transit, while others believe it shows the location of new streets or roadways. Actually, the Carson Area Transportation Plan is this and a lot more."
The Regional Transportation Plan covers several topics. The main element is on streets and highways and includes a look at traffic flow in the years 2005, 2015 and 2025. The 20-year plan combines current and future land use with current traffic counts to predict future traffic flows through the city.
The information is used to determine when and where the city may need to build new roadways or make improvements to existing roadways.
Other elements covered in the plan include pedestrian, bicycle, public transportation (transit) and financial plans. The financial plan depends on actions taken with the other elements and will be completed after the public comment period.
Copies of the Draft Regional Transportation Plan are available at the Carson City Library or Community Development office. There are also copies available for public viewing at the Development Services Office, 3505 Butti Way.
The Carson City Planning Commission will have a presentation of the plan at its May 26 meeting with the Carson City Board of Supervisors receiving a presentation June 17. The plan will go the to the Carson Area Metropolitan Planning Organization for final approval at a special meeting to be held June 29 in the Sierra Room at the community center.
