George I. Stillwell

George I. Stillwell, 84, a Carson City resident for more than 30 years, died Nov. 30, 2004, at Carson-Tahoe Hospital.

He was born Feb. 19, 1920, in Bisbee, Ariz., to Robert and Ethel Cooper Stillwell.

He attended high school in Oakland, Calif.

He married Patricia Hall in 1947 in Oakland. She preceded him in death in 1980 in Carson City.

Before moving to Carson City, he lived in Oakland for many years.

Mr. Stillwell was manager of Safeway stores in San Francisco. He was a devoted backpacker and hiked along the John Muir Trail and the entire Pacific Crest Trail. He was a staunch environmentalist.

He was a first lieutenant in the Army during World War II.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters.

Among his survivors are his daughter, Carol A. Fleisig of Coarsegold, Calif.; sister Dorothy Davis of Eureka, Calif.; and two grandchildren.

Burial will be at Lone Mountain Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Sierra Club.

Walton's Chapel of the Valley is in charge of arrangements.
