Shopping spree winner can help out a charity, too

With two minutes of unbridled grocery shopping fervor, the purchasing possibilities are endless.

Grocery Outlet's shopping spree winners could grab a copy of "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," gobs of Halloween candy, or a Sharp 1,200-watt microwave. Sticky fingers and agile aisle sprinting are a benefit in this race against the clock.

A stiff shopping cart wheel may be the demise.

Tuesday is the last day for Grocery Outlet shoppers to enter its Basket Bonanza shopping spree. The winner gets a two-minute spree, and also one for a favorite local charity.

Ariel Cassady, spokeswoman for Grocery Outlet, said this is the second year the company has done the free shopping spree, but it's the first time they've added in the benefit to charity.

"With so many people away at war and so many families struggling, we thought this would help not only the person who wins but the community," she said Thursday.

Cassady said the winning shoppers can usually pick up $300 worth of groceries in their cart.
