Carson High basketball boys will shoot for the hoops at the annual "Beer and Brats" Saturday at the Carson Station Grill.

Sample beers and sink your teeth into a tasty bratwurst as you check out the silent-auction table. Rick Murdock, alumni of Carson High School, has made a donation from the El Dorado hotel and casino in Reno.

With Halloween coming soon, catch the Children's Museum's "Make a Scarecrow Day" Saturday. Bring old clothes, hats, gloves, scarves, overalls - whatever you feel your scarecrow should wear to frighten birds away. Also the museum will have a trick-or-treat event for children and parents. I will give more information next week.

If you can't get to the Children's Museum, go to Sprint Cellular Store the following weekend to make a scarecrow and enjoy some Roundtable pizza. Proceeds benefit Carson City elementary schools.

American Youth Soccer Organization is teaming up with the Skin Cancer Awareness Foundation and Sun Safe City Program Saturday to sponsor "Bowling for Sun Safety" for all ages. There will also be a Skin Cancer Awareness Expo featuring health-related booths and exhibits.

John Vettel dropped me a line about his son's up-and-coming performance in the Western Nevada Performing Arts' "A Tribute to Broadway" at the Community Center. The high-energy song-and-dance musical features the music from "42nd Street," "Oliver!" "A Chorus Line" and "Will Rogers' Follies."

In November, Raley's is starting an easy way to help your favorite school by saving Campbell soup labels and General Mills educational box tops. Drop them off at Raley's, earmarked for your school. This helps schools purchase free educational items.
