Voting is better than complaining

Last chance to vote today in the primaries ... and thanks to Secretary of State Dean Heller and all the nice folks down at the County Clerk's Office, we're voting on Sequoia machines that have a paper trail, unlike some of the others around the country that don't ... good going, guys and gals ... and if you don't vote ... ya ain't got no right to complain. ...

By the way, if you need help with "stuff," we know of a couple of neat people who do all kinds of things like fixing your sink, plaster holes in the wall, paint, hang a door or two ... you know, the kinds of things you can't, or don't want to do ... Curtis Radig (he and his wife, Sonia, entertain a lot in rest homes with "golden oldies" and are seen in a lot of WNCC musicals) has "Affordable Handyman" at 741-5445; and Marty Tate, "Doodads ... because Doodads do what Dads don't do" at 883-2385 ... and they do make "house calls". ...

We both, unbeknownst to the other, ended up at Thurman's for dinner Friday night ... and, while pigging out on the good food, saw myriad friends ... Sally Dunfield and family celebrating her 83rd birthday (happy belated birthday, Sally) ... Dorothy Tate and Dave Kerfeld ... Mayor Ray and Diane Maysako ... Eloise Koenig and Roger Maillard ... and our ever-charming host, Skip Thurman and his ever-charming staff ... as usual, we ate too much. ...

And speaking of Roger Maillard (well, sort of) ... he went to Las Vegas last month to meet Sen. John Kerry, and, while there, asked him to autograph his book ... Roger then jokingly asked him, "I wonder what this'll get on eBay?"

The senator grinned at him and said, "I don't know, but when you find out, let me know ... " Maybe, he can use that idea as a fund-raiser. ...

Dr. Harold Woerbel turned 90 the other day (he fanned out all his candles with his hat before the fire department came), and celebrated with a fun party at the Nevada State Railroad Museum ... while there, the "Right Reverend" Bill Kohler got stung by a bee/wasp/hornet (one of them pesky critters) ... he should have used a squirt of Formula 409 ... it zaps those suckers to bug heaven ... a man of God should know these things. ...

Don't let 2-week-old babies chew gum ... in a long list of "How Carolyn tried to kill her sister, Nancy," their mother came in on the Big C trying to stuff a piece of gum in her sister's mouth and making chewing sounds ... "Like this, baby ... "

Needless to say, Nancy survived ... however, it was only the first in a series of attempts on her life (the "walking over hot coals" story will come at a later date) ... in other words, don't mess with the Big C ... unless you have a big switch. ...

We both had a wonderful tour of the new Carson-Tahoe Hospital last week conducted by Kevin Stansbury, chief operations officer; Mary Woods, director of business development; and Marcos Romano, superintendent of H. Hunt Group Inc., the contractors on the job.

It's going to be ready for us in December 2005 ... and will have 146 single-patient rooms with private baths ... gorgeous views out every window (and huge windows, at that) ... wonderful facilities everywhere ... so much so, that we're thinking of checking in just on "general principles" when they open.

And one other thing they can be proud of ... they've had over 270 days without a "time lost" accident ... quite an accomplishment on a job such as this. ...

One of their labor and delivery nurses, Suzanne Lequerica (Carolyn's "baby girl"), is featured in the new Western Nevada Community College booklet "This way to a brighter future" ... (but, she has a daughter and a son, not two daughters, as the booklet proclaimed ... OK, Reed?)

For all you who have been waiting a year (like "Chicago Bob") ... the Brewery Arts Center's Beer Tasting will be Friday (call 883-1976 for information) ... we will be appearing as the slave labor (aka "barmaids") ... and will be donating a "breakfast for two" with us as a silent auction item ... so bring lots of money and boost the Brewery. ...

We're glad to hear June Joplin's son, Lance Cpl. Clinton Darquea, is back from Afghanistan and safely ensconced in Camp Lejeune, N.C. ... even if he is "bored" there (Marines like "action," even if they're in harm's way) ... June wishes he was bored in Camp Pendleton ... it's closer to home. ...

Didn't you think Vanderlei de Lima, the Olympic marathoner from Brazil, showed a lot of class when he received the bronze medal after being pushed into the crowd by a nutcase when he was leading the race by a substantial margin? He deserved the medal they awarded him for sportsmanship, too.
