Night seminars offer credit toward MBA

Earning university credit toward a master's in business administration may seem like a daunting task to the upwardly mobile.

Officials at the University of Nevada, Reno College of Business Administration want to make the program attractive to those who work 40 hours a week, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Former Reno dentist Van Ness Hansen did it.

"There was excellent instruction and material," he said Wednesday about the university's advanced management program. "I have totally positive comments about it. They made it real convenient for people who are working."

Hansen said he earned the three credits from taking the series, but he hasn't yet earned his MBA.

"I probably won't get it," he said. "I'm 76, but I have an interest in keeping up with business principles."

Hansen recently retired after 45 years as a dentist. Now he's an entrepreneur. Hansen owns Quality Plastics in Sparks with his son-in-law. The company makes a solar-powered cooling system that is distributed in Gardnerville.

The advanced management program is an intensive 11-session series for executives and managers held at the university's Continuing Education Building, 1041 N. Virginia St. The series begins on Saturday with an orientation from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All following sessions are Tuesday evenings from 6-9 p.m. starting Sept. 14 and ending with graduation Nov. 23. Participants will earn the advanced management certificate from the university after completing nine of the 11 sessions.

The program fee is $1,875 which includes tuition, course books, materials, refreshments, the orientation lunch and the fee for the graduation reception, said Kim Zaski, director of marketing for extended studies.

For the additional fee of $382.50, students can earn graduate-level elective credits toward the university's MBA program. Students must have a bachelor's degree to earn graduate credits. Earning the MBA credits doesn't guarantee acceptance into the master's program.

Zaski said registrations will be accepted up until the day of orientation.
