Library Week: Relive a breathtaking journey

The Carson City Library will present "Everest," a MacGillivray Freeman Film, as seen in IMAX theaters, at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Library's auditorium.

Relive a breathtaking journey to the top of the world. The presentation of this film will emphasize National Library Week's theme, "Extreme Encounters @ Your Library!"

Filmed during the infamous 1996 storm that claimed eight lives "Everest" documents the filmmakers' harrowing rescue efforts to help surviving members of the ill-fated group. The film is narrated by Academy Award nominee Liam Neeson and includes the music of George Harrison.

The 7 p.m. program is free and open to the public. National Library Week is sponsored by the Friends of the Carson City Library.

Meetings set for neighborhoods

Four Carson City neighborhoods hope to be more prepared for this year's fire season by mobilizing to form local chapters of the Nevada Fire Safe Council.

With help from University of Nevada Cooperative Extension, the areas of Mexican Dam and Piñon Hills, Kings Canyon and Timberline are each meeting in hopes of forming local fire safe council chapters. Lakeview has already formed a chapter. Meetings will be held April 19-28 and are open to the public.

• Mexican Dam and Piñon Hills: 5:30-7:30 p.m., April 19 at the BLM office, 5665 Morgan Mill Road.

• Kings Canyon: 6-8 p.m., April 20, Carson City Library, 900 N. Roop St.

• Timberline: 6-8 p.m., April 26, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension office, 2621 Northgate Lane, Suite 12.

• Lakeview: 6-8 p.m., April 28, Carson City Fire Department Station No. 1, 777 S. Stewart St.

Gardnerville

Historical Society annual meeting

The annual membership meeting of the Douglas County Historical Society will be at 7 p.m. May 19 at the Carson Valley Museum and Cultural Center, 1477 Highway 395 N, Gardnerville.

Members attending the meeting will vote to fill Board of Trustee vacancies and to elect new officers. All members are encouraged to attend this annual meeting. This is your opportunity to have a voice in the future of the historical society.

St. Gall offers chance to learn about Catholicism

St. Gall Catholic Church invites all who are interested in learning more about the Catholic Church to a series of Inquiry Sessions from 9:10-10:25 a.m. Sunday in St. Gall's Pastoral Center.

Anyone with questions about the Catholic faith or practices or who is interested in becoming a Catholic can hear presentations and ask questions in an informative and open environment. The inquiry sessions will introduce participants to the church's study program of regularly conducted classes and discussion sessions.

Initial sessions begin with an inquiry phase with no obligation.

PBS's "Antiques Road Show" will feature Piper's Opera House in Virginia City on its program Monday. Tune to KNPB-Reno Channel 5, for a feature on the Grand Dame of our nation's historic theatres.

Lake Tahoe

77,000 people needed to form human chain

Hands Around Lake Tahoe is celebrating it's third year of attempting to form a human chain around the lake in the name of peace and healing. Last year, an estimated 7,000 people held hands on the beaches around the lake. This year we hope to have over 77,000 people to form a human chain to reach completely around the lake.

Hands Around Lake Tahoe was founded by Debi LeFaye, high-priestess of the Academy of the Ancient Arts in Tahoe City.

Everyone is welcome to join this healing event to take a stand for world peace and healing. Hands Around Lake Tahoe organizers stress that every person counts to make this happen.

Hands Around Lake Tahoe is set for noon June 25 on the beaches and shoreline of Lake Tahoe.
